Dr. Jessica Richman, PhD
Co-Founder & CEO
Dr. Jessica Richman studied computer science and economics at Stanford University and then received a fellowship to Oxford, where she earned her Masters and PhD and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Wired, MIT Technology Review, Scientific American and dozens of other media outlets. In addition, Dr. Richman has been a TEDMED speaker, and named as one of the top five Women in Tech by Elle magazine.
In 2012, Dr. Richman co-founded uBiome with a mission to transform the science of the microbiome into useful products and services that improve people’s lives. Using a 250,000 sample dataset (the largest in the world), uBiome has developed key technologies (6 issued patents, over 150 filed, and over 20 peer-reviewed scientific presentations and publications), that allow the company to make groundbreaking products. uBiome has built a cutting-edge technology platform in order to tackle a wide range of health conditions and to partner with leading organizations in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries to make microbiome-aware products.
In 2016, uBiome launched SmartGut™, the world’s first sequencing-based clinical microbiome screening test, providing patients and doctors with actionable insights to improve gut health. The test uses the patented precision sequencing technology to identify dozens of microbes associated with specific infections, health risks and gut conditions. SmartGut empowers patients to take steps to understand their gut health and assess actionable information about their gut microbiome with their doctors.
A year later, in 2017, uBiome launched SmartJane™, the first sequencing-based, doctor-ordered, at-home women’s health test. SmartJane is the first test to combine HPV genotyping, sexually transmitted infections (STI) testing and microbial risk factors for HPV infection, bacterial vaginosis, cervicitis, idiopathic infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and aerobic vaginitis.
In January 2018 ExplorerPlus™ was launched — the next generation of its popular Explorer™ health and wellness product. ExplorerPlus uses uBiome’s precision sequencing™ platform, a patented combination of full metagenomic and marker-based sequencing, that allows users to see more of their microbiome — including viruses and fungi, in addition to archaea (single-celled microorganisms) and bacteria.
All uBiome tests have a simple, at-home, sample collection process that takes under two minutes to complete and are mailed directly to the laboratory — making them easy and convenient to use.
uBiome is funded by Y Combinator, Andreessen Horowitz, 8VC, as well as other leading investors, and has received widespread recognition including the CNN 10: Startups to Watch, IVY Technology Award, CNN Future 30, was a Medtech Innovator Finalist, and was named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies in Healthcare in 2016 and in Data Science in 2018.
